4-tert-Butylcatechol (TBC)
4-tert-butylbenzene-1,2-diol
CAS# 98-29-3
4-tert-Butylcatechol (TBC, CAS: 98-29-3) is a highly effective, colorless phenolic antioxidant and polymerization inhibitor. Its robust chemical structure, featuring the tert-butyl group, provides superior stability and potency, making it the preferred choice for preventing premature polymerization during the processing and storage of unsaturated monomers, significantly extending product shelf life.

Uses of TBC
TBC is primarily utilized in the chemical industry as a crucial polymerization inhibitor and stabilizer. Its main application is stabilizing reactive monomers, such as butadiene, styrene, vinyl acetate, and various acrylates, during distillation and transportation. By scavenging free radicals, TBC prevents spontaneous polymerization. It is also employed as an antioxidant in lubricants, elastomers, and certain resins to protect materials from oxidative degradation. Its efficiency ensures high-quality end products and dramatically reduces costly downtime in manufacturing processes.
TBC in Solution and Dispersion
TBC ships as flakes and as a liquid. The liquid forms are made up in toluene, methanol, styrene or water, at the concentration your unit doses at rather than to a fixed grade.
Three of those four carriers give a solution. Water does not. TBC dissolves in water to about 0.2 g per 100 mL at 25°C, so what the trade calls a "TBC 85% aqueous solution" is a dispersion — a pale yellow liquid or slurry that separates if it is not kept moving. Storage and dosing follow from that.
Tell us the carrier, the concentration and where in the process it is dosed, and we will confirm against the current lot what can be supplied and in what form it ships.
