Methyl 2,2,2-Trifluoroethyl Carbonate (FEMC)

methyl 2,2,2-trifluoroethyl carbonate
CAS# 156783-95-8
Methyl 2,2,2-trifluoroethyl carbonate (FEMC) is a fluorinated linear carbonate supplied for advanced electrolyte formulation work. It is used as a component of Li-ion and Li-metal battery electrolytes, where fluorinated linear carbonates are evaluated for their contribution to the thermal and electrochemical behaviour of high-voltage systems. Part of the fluorinated electrolyte solvents and safety additives series.

Uses of FEMC
FEMC is used as a solvent or co-solvent in electrolyte formulations for lithium batteries. Its trifluoroethyl group has been reported to contribute to the formation of a LiF-rich Solid Electrolyte Interphase (SEI) on graphite and silicon anodes, and to the passivation of high-voltage cathode surfaces. Where those effects are obtained, they are associated with improved capacity retention, longer cycle life and reduced gas generation in high-energy-density and safety-oriented applications, including EVs and grid storage.
How much of that is realised in a given cell depends on the electrolyte formulation, the electrode chemistry, the lithium salt system and the operating conditions. FEMC is evaluated as part of a formulation rather than assessed on its own.
